HGR INFO RESOURCES - Organizations and Activities Dedicated to Genocide Awareness and Prevention

Are you looking to join or support a Holocaust and Genocide Organization?

GPN Genocide Prevention Now intends to compile and maintain an ongoing international directory of many organizations that promote an awareness of genocide and its ramifications along with its prevention.

As the number of organizations continue to grow yearly, the interest, concern and dedication to confront the issue of genocide grows. Our list includes the following types of organizations: Genocide Prevention Organizations, Scholarly Organizations, University-affiliated Institutes and Centers, Holocaust Organizations, Armenian Genocide Organizations, Cambodian Genocide Organizations, Kurdish Genocide Organizations, Native American Genocide Commemorative Organizations, Organizations that fund and support genocide projects and awareness, and organizations specializing in the genocides of other ethnic groups and others.

The development of organizations in the field of Holocaust and genocide studies includes an activist as well as scholarly approaches to the field. Through GPN, we want to provide an overview of the various organizations in the field, including those that address areas of genocide within their larger organization. We hope that people consulting GPN will be able to locate specific organizations that can assist them in their personal interest and approach to the field.

We are interested in receiving information about additional organizations that do not appear in our listing. Our aim is to build a comprehensive directory of organizations that reflect the truly interdisciplinary field of Holocaust and genocide studies.

All submissions should be sent to: Marc I. Sherman, Director, Holocaust and Genocide Review, GPN Genocide Prevention Now. E-mail: msherman.gpn@genocidepreventionnow.org.

GPN will also profile some individual organization that contributes meaningfully to a further development in our field. In this issue, we are proud to profile:

All-Party Parliamentary Groups in England and Canada
Explanation:

What is an APPG?
An All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) is a grouping in the Parliament of the England composed of politicians from all political parties. This concept was initiated in England and has been applied in other Parliaments worldwide.

APPG's meet together, relatively informally, to discuss a particular issue of concern. APPG's are either country based or subject based, with a focus on topics. APPGs generally have officers drawn from the major political parties and strive to avoid favoring one political party or another. APPG's tend to focus most on the governing party's priorities, discussing new developments and inviting Government Ministers to speak at their meetings.

Why are APPG's relevant to Genocide Prevention?
Although APPG's do not maintain a formal place in the legislature, they are an effective way of bringing together parliamentarians and interested parties concerned with specific topics. APPG's work with campaign groups, charities and NGO's in the field to become involved in discussions on issues such as genocide and influence politicians. Often a relevant charity or other organization will provide a secretariat for the group helping to arrange meetings and keeping track of members of the APPG - for example the Genocide Prevention All-Party Parliamentary Group is administered by The Aegis Trust (the leading genocide prevention NGO in the UK).

In a future issue of GPN, we will provide a fuller Directory of Organizations which will combine major organizations for genocide studies that have been listed in several issues.
